Children's 19th Century Scientific Literature

Sophie Bledsoe Herrick
(1837-1919)
Herrick was born in Gambler, Ohio, the daughter of Dr. Albert T. Bledsoe. She was educated at home initially under the direction of her father. Her education was then furthered at the Cooper Female Institute in Dayton, Ohio. In 1860, she married James Burton Herrick. She went on to become a school principal in Baltimore and, later, went to work with her father managing the "Southern Review," becoming editor-in-chief in 1877. From there, she joined "Scribner's Monthly" editorial staff. Aside from this, however, she had a real interest in microscopy and was an accomplished microscopist. She wrote and illustrated two botany books for children, The Wonders of Plant Life (1883) and Chapters in Plant Life (1885), images of which can be seen below.
