John C. McCook
(1837-1911)

John C. McCook was one of three sons; he was born July 3, 1837, at New Lisbon, Ohio. McCook married Miss Ermma C. Horter of New Lisbon. He graduated from Jefferson College and also studied at Western Theological Seminary (Presbyterian). He fought and raised troops for the civil war until he was appointed chaplain of the regiment and returned home by order of the Presbytery of Steubenville, Ohio.

He authored a number of popular theological and ecclesiastical books, but is particularly well-known as a naturalist. His studies of ants and spiders, on whose habits he wrote several important books and numerous papers, made his name known among the naturalists of Europe and America. His works include American Spiders, Honey Ants and Occident Ants, and the Mound Making of the Alleghanies.

Below are scenes from his Tenants of an Old Farm (1885)
