Bittersweet: The History of Sugar in North America

An exhibit at Findlay Market

Findlay market Bittersweet sign"Bittersweet: The History of Sugar in North America" was produced by Professor Karim Tiro and his public history students at Xavier University. The exhibit challenges its audience to consider the interaction of food and history by examining the production and industry of sugar as well as its culinary, medicinal, and herbal uses. It also explores negative consequences of the sugar industry such as slavery and exploitation of both land and humans.

Findlay market exhibit descriptionFindlay Market, located near downtown Cincinnati at Findlay and Race streets in Over-the-Rhine, will host the exhibit through July, 2009. The Market serves as a public gathering place for all members of the Cincinnati community and visitors to the area.
