Marcello Malpighi was an Italian physician trained at the University of Bologna. He worked extensively in anatomy and published his research findings often at the Royal Society in London. He was, in fact, the first Italian member of the Society. He is well known for his discovery of capillaries and the first to make the describe and understand how arteries and veins works together. Due to his use of the microscope in his work, he has been called the founder of microscopic anatomy, a skill he applied to both animals and plants.
