Services and Policies
Lending Policy
The Library does not loan books or journals. However, photocopies of materials are provided through inter-library loan, arranged primarily through another library or a document delivery service. Requests from individual researchers will also be accommodated when correct and adequate bibliographic citations are provided.
Costs for inter-library loan via mail or fax are $15.00 for the first 25 pages and $0.25 per additional page.

The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material. Under conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is NOT to be used for any other purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research. Further reproduction or deposit in an archive, library, or other institution is prohibited. The Lloyd Library reserves the right to refuse copy or reproduction orders if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the orders would involve violation of copyright law. All responsibility for compliance with copyright laws in the appropriate jurisdiction arising from the use of materials is the researcher's. |
16 |
Researchers may neither USE nor REVEAL BY NAME OR ASSOCIATION the identity of any individual whose health information is in a document or record without express written permission from the persons named or their legal guardians or heirs. Researchers may not use the names that they find in the records to contact those individuals directly or indirectly, nor may they compile lists of names from research or medical records. It is the responsibility of the researcher, NOT the Lloyd Library, to establish such permission. |

Researcher Policies
The Lloyd Library serves patrons from around the world, both onsite and distance. Onsite research is strongly encouraged, though not always possible. Whether you will be visiting the Lloyd or emailing or phoning us for assistance, please read the following pieces of information to make your research experience go more smoothly and to enable us to assist you more completely.
Distance researchers will, in the event of a lengthy query, be advised of research fees (see above), as Lloyd Staff cannot spend excessive time working a project for a single researcher without the Library being compensated for redirection of work effort.
Researchers must follow the library usage guidelines as outlined above and follow all publication and image reproduction standards as set out in the law.
Researchers are advised to contact the Library in advance of their visit for several reasons:
-
to ensure that there is no programming taking place that would interfere with research time.
-
to enable the Lloyd staff to prepare items in advance of a research visit and to collect both requested items and materials deemed potentially useful to the researcher as determined by Lloyd staff.
-
In short, advanced contact will enable the Lloyd staff to best serve researchers and for researchers to make the most of the time they have to spend with us.

Publication and Display Policy
The Lloyd Library and Museum requires any person or organization that wishes to publish or display a quotation, transcription, or reproduction, either photographic or digital, of a photograph or manuscript or archival document to apply for permission. See the Application for Permission to Publish or Display Form. Please mail the completed application, along with a copy of the quotation, transcription, item, or photograph to be reproduced to the Library Director.
Permission to publish or display, if granted, is for a one-time, non-exclusive right to publish a single edition or to display a reproduction for a limited time in a specified location. Such permission is non-transferable. Authorization by the Lloyd is NOT a copyright agreement and does not remove the patron's responsibility to guard against the infringement of rights held by others.
The Lloyd must be credited if you are using quotations, transcriptions, or reproduced images of documents or photographs in our collections for publication or display, or for any use other than private research or enjoyment. The Lloyd will provide the language to be used in the credit line.
Images and/or copies of documents or photographs made for publication or display, either print or electronic, must NOT be duplicated, reproduced for resale, loaned to or deposited with another individual or repository without permission. In addition, they must NOT be altered in any way.
One complimentary copy of the publication must be given to the Lloyd Library and Museum. When a fee is involved a Reproduction and Use Agreement will be signed by the Lloyd Library and Museum and the person or organization requesting permission.
Permission for use of manuscript documents or photographs in other formats such as electronic media, advertising, souvenirs, television, radio, etc. must additionally be negotiated with the Lloyd.

Programs
We are always interested in providing tours and special programs to groups who have interest in the topic areas covered by the Library.
While we will make every attempt to accommodate the needs of the group, it is best to contact the Director as far in advance of the desired date as possible.
The program will include an introduction to the Library and its collection, a discussion of the Lloyds and their business and a viewing of holdings that will be of particular interest to the group.
Current Programs at the Lloyd:
-
Group Visits, Meetings, and Off-site Presentations
-
We are always interested in hosting groups who have an interest in visiting the Lloyd Library and learning more about it. While we will make every attempt to accomodate the needs of the group, it is best to
contact the Director as far in advance of the desired date and time as possible. Your visit will include an introduction to the Library and its collections, a discussion of the Lloyds and their business, and a display of materials that will be of particular interest to the group.
-
If your group would prefer a presentation similar to that described above at a venue other than the Lloyd, we will be happy to come to you. Again, it is best to contact the Director as far in advance of the desired date and time as possible.
-
The Lloyd can also provide a comfortable meeting place in the Library's beautiful, quiet, and newly renovated conference room for groups of no more than 20. Please contact the Director as far in advance of the desired date and time as possible. In addition, please state audiovisual and/or electronic equipment requirements to insure that the Library can accomodate your needs.
-
A minimum of 10 people is required for group meetings; and, a suggested $50 donation to the library for group bookings is appreciated.
-
Archives in the Classroom
-
Archival materials, accompanied by the Lloyd's archivist, can be used to demonstrate various aspects of local history, either at the Lloyd or at your location.
Contact the archivist to make arrangements.
-
Changing Exhibits
-
Consisting of regularly scheduled exhibits of selected material from Lloyd Library's collections, the purpose of this program is to offer the general public an educational and/or esthetic experience of visual arts, botanical or natural history illustration, local history, or the history of natural sciences, medicine, pharmacy, or medical botany. We strive to offer at least two different exhibits annually, generally during the spring and fall seasons. These are often accompanied by an opening reception and lecture(s) relevant to the topic of the exhibit. As time and space permits, we will also display works of local artists whose materials, medium, and/or thematic content represent the natural world. Please click on the Exhibits link in the quicklinks for information on current and upcoming exhibits.
Donations Process
The Lloyd Library is interested in receiving book and archival materials that relate to the focus areas of its collection. Some individuals will be willing to donate a few items which will be acknowledged appropriately. Others may elect to donate significant collections of published and/or unpublished materials. In this case recognition can be devised through the Librarys catalog (on-line), book plates or other suitable means.
The process for donating materials to the Lloyd is spelled out in our Deed of Gift Agreement Form, but some brief information follows here:
-
The donor should
contact the Director to confirm that the materials are within the collection focus of the Library before forwarding any materials.
-
Establishment of the monetary value of the donation is the responsibility of the Donor. The Lloyd cannot provide an evaluation of the value since it is an interested party in the transaction.
-
Unpublished materials will be maintained as part of the archives. A finding guide will be developed as quickly as possible to facilitate use by interested researchers.
-
Access to unpublished personal papers can be restricted to written permission of the donor for the lifetime of the donor.
-
Published materials will be added to the Librarys catalog with a notation made identifying the donor.
